I-66 Multimodal Improvements
As a High View Park/Halls Hill resident, you should be aware that the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is planning changes to I-66 that will impact our access to the freeway and use of our streets. The plan is for improvements to the freeway and surrounding transit infrastructure paid for by the imposition of High Occupancy Toll (HOT) restrictions during peak commute times.
VDOT presented to the community at the Central Library on August 1st. Here are some details from that meeting: VDOT is performing a study to set the proposed toll amount and to understand how the proposed changes will impact congestion on 66 and neighboring streets. The plan is for 4-hour windows of HOV restrictions (both ways) during the morning and evening rush hours, meaning either you pay a toll or have enough riders to travel on the roadway. They are also examining whether free access will be granted with the current HOV 2 limit or raise it to HOV 3. The proposal will also change the existing access rights for certain vehicles during the restricted times, meaning you will no longer have free access with a single rider if you drive a car with clean special vehicles plates, or are trying to access Dulles Airport.
Besides the changes noted above, the toll revenue will fund highway improvements, multimodal projects, and targeted lane additions. VDOT is expected to present its plan to the public in October, with the project becoming fully operational in mid-2017. You can find details of the proposed project at: transform66.org.
