National Volunteer Week, April 10-16, was established in 1974 and is sponsored by a group called Points of Light, the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service. Through its affiliates and partnerships, Points of Light engages 4 millionvolunteers in 30 million hours ofservice each year.

As noted on their website, National Volunteer Week is about…

  • Inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities;
  • Demonstrating to the nation that by working together, we have the fortitude to meet our challenges and accomplish our goals;
  • Taking action and encouraging individuals and their respective communities to be at the center of social change – discovering and actively demonstrating their collective power to make a difference.
